Diabetic first-time voter on Amendment 2 campaign

Text Box:

November 5, 2006

My name is Chris Jackson and I am an 18 year old diabetic.  I am the same Chris Jackson from a recent Post-Dispatch article, who takes stem cell research personally.  My family and I support the Stem Cell Initiative of Amendment 2, so when a recent packet from the Missouri Roundtable for Life was passed around through several neighborhoods, it too hit me very personally.

What this packet did was take small segments from Amendment 2, and then twist and contort them to the point where they didn't even follow what the amendment says.  They don't actually seem to understand the science behind stem cell research.

One particular point seemed extremely unreasonable to me.  The amendment quote is "No stem cells may be taken from a human blastocyst more than fourteen days after cell division begins; provided, however, that time during which a blastocyst is frozen does not count against the fourteen-day limit."  The Missouri Roundtable translated this to mean, "A constitutional right to abort unborn children to harvest their stem cells."  Yes, those are their exact words.

I can't even fathom how the Missouri Roundtable for Life could have drawn this out of what the amendment says.  This translation leads me to the question of how paranoid I would have to be to actually believe that this amendment is supporting abortion, let alone human cloning (cloning a human being is very clearly banned in the amendment).

On top of this very troubling packet are commercials that argue against Amendment 2.  In one commercial, Kurt Warner says that in California cures are up to 15 years away.  In 15 years, I will be about 33 years old, and to me that seems pretty hopeful.  I would like you to imagine how much more hopeful it would seem if Missouri were to vote to allow stem cell research.  In Missouri, we could even work with California and cut down the time until a cure.

I'll be voting in my first election November 7th, and I'll be voting YES on Amendment 2.
