Speak out! When Missouri Rep. Jim Lembke said the Missouri Stem Cell Initiative was about “cash, not cures” this letter was sent to the St. Louis Post Dispatch and published on March 5, 2006. |

Some web sites have special sections just for this. Here are two examples: Missouri Coalition for Lifesaving Cures Check out their “Stories of Hope” page. You can submit a story there.

Generally, the answer is YES. Contact your favorite stem cell organization and request a speaker. Most are happy to accommodate your request. They can usually provide brochures or other “leave behind” materials. |
|
Find your local and state stem cell organizations. You can do a search using keywords such as the name of your city, your state and adding “stem cell.” Once you’ve identified those organizations, visit their web sites. Most importantly, JOIN. Ask them how you can help. They’ll certainly welcome you as both a member and a volunteer. You should also educate yourself. Read as much as you can. There is a wealth of information available. Ask questions. Be prepared to discuss facts; don’t spread fiction. |

I know someone who might be helped by stem cell research. Where can we tell the story? |

Elected officials need to hear from their constituents. That’s how they know what the folks are thinking “back home.” Often you can engage them in meaningful dialogue. Here’s one our editor wrote to Missouri Senators. And here’s the reply he received from Senator Bond. He then sent Bond this response. And here’s one our editor wrote to a State Representative who was obviously uninformed. She stated that she opposed SCNT research because: a) the unfertilized egg cell was implanted with someone’s complete DNA [which she claimed made it a human being], and b) because it self-metabolized. She then went on to invoke an analogy between stem cell research and Nazi “genetic experiments.” Just as importantly, be sure to thank politicians who support stem cell research! Here’s an example of one written to Senator Harkin of Iowa. |
