Chicago - Illinois’ Governor and Comptroller are scheduled to announce on Monday that Illinois will be joining the growing number of states funding stem cell research in the wake of President Bush’s severe limitations.  The State of Illinois has awarded $10 million in research grants to 10 recipients chosen from among 24 applicants.

The grants are specifically directed toward stem cell research in Illinois.  Recipients include researchers affiliated with Northwestern University, the University of Illinois, Children’s Memorial Hospital, Loyola University, the Hines VA Hospital and the University of Chicago.

Governor Blagojevich issued an executive order last year that the state’s department of public health establish and implement the grant program.  This funding is the first under that program.

“This is the first time Illinois is awarding state funded grants for stem cell research and that makes today an important day for our state,” remarked the Governor.  “The promise of stem cell research is unlimited.”

The governor’s office had earlier confirmed that at least a portion of the grants would be used to fund embryonic stem cell research.
